Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori launch first monolingual dictionary
After years of work, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (the Maori Language Commission) launches the first I-papakupu / online dictionary for proficient speakers tonight. The online launch is being hosted by Hon Parekura Horomia, the Minister of Maori Affairs at 6pm, Grand Hall, Parliament.
The I-papakupu is the first of its kind, following the publication of Tirohia Kimihia, the monolingual dictionary for wharekura students. The i-papakupu is the the adult partner to this publication. It shows synonyms and tribal variants of headwords, captures some of the more recent developments in the Maori lexicon and is an important resource to support the ongoing efforts to revitalise te reo Maori.
The dictionary is now available online on Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori’s website www.koreromaori.co.nz. Print copies of the dictionary will be available from retail outlets in September 2008.
At the launch a number of remote connections will be made with users, both nationally and internationally, including connecting to Commissioners and using dialectical variations and connecting with London to demonstrate worldwide accessibility.
Today, Huhana Rokx, Chief Executive of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori says, “Tonight is an enormous accomplishment for all the people who contributed to this i-papakupu over the years. The online dictionary is specifically for native and highly proficient adult speakers. Resources that reach highly proficient speakers, assist to ensure the ongoing advancement of our language.”
