Raukawa Trust Board scoops Supreme award

The winners of the categories for the Maori Language Awards were announced today at He Huia Kaimanawa, the two day Maori Language Expo taking place at Te Rauparaha Arena and Event Centre in Porirua.

Te Poari Matua o Raukawa in Tokoroa received Te Tohu Huia Kaimanawa, the Supreme Award for 2009. Chief Executive of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori Huhana Rokx says that the award was given in recognition of the stellar work the Trust Board does to support Maori language re-generation within their iwi and wider community.

“They are considered leaders in language planning and strategy, their commitment is unequivocal, they continue to set the bar for excellence as far as language revitalisation goes and we are proud of their achievements”, says Huhana Rokx.

Professor Timoti Karetu, long time language advocate and supporter was the inaugural winner of the Taku Toa Takimano award, given in recognition of an individual’s efforts to the language.

“Timoti is considered the personification of Maori language excellence, known for his exacting standards, persistent leadership and undying passion. It was only fitting that the inaugural Taku Toa Takimano award be given to him in acknowledgement of his many contributions to the revitalisation of the language over the years’, says Huhana Rokx.

The language learning programme Te Ataarangi received Te Tira Aumangea award, given to a group or organisation in recognition of their efforts towards language revitalisation.

“You cannot deny the impact that Te Ataarangi has had on language revitalisation efforts. It has probably been more successful at creating adult speakers of the language than any other initiative. In acknowledging Te Ataarangi we also remember the efforts of those who are no longer with us like Ngoingoi Pewhairangi who together with Katerina Te Heikoko Mataira, started Te Ataarangi” says Huhana Rokx.
