Resources for Maori Language Week released

New resources released promote and support Maori language in the home as the theme for this year’s Maori Language Week.

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (The Maori Language Commission) Chief Executive Huhana Rokx says, “Te Reo i te Kainga – Maori Language in the Home is the theme of this year’s Maori Language Week which runs from 21st July to 27th July. The aim is to support, encourage and inspire whanau in the home and the wider community to speak and share the reo Maori they know while they are out and about in their daily lives,” says Huhana Rokx.

“Our partners - Te Puni Kokiri, Human Rights Commission, Families Commission and Te Kohanga Reo National Trust have been working with us to promote and celebrate the week throughout the country. We have produced resources for our families to support them using the Maori language in their everyday activities,” says Huhana Rokx.

Resources for Maori Language Week 2008 include a full colour booklet ‘Te Reo i te Kainga’, with helpful phrases, words and activities for a range of settings in the home, a series of four stickers, posters, stick mats, t-shirts, ra whanau balloons, click phrase pens and more.

“We are continually updating our Maori Language Week web pages to give people ideas and information about the week and on what is required to win an award. The main criteria are innovative and creative use of te reo and involvement of the wider community,” says Huhana Rokx.
