Tapoi or Tourism is the theme of Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori – Maori Language Week 23-29 July 2007.

Efforts this year are aimed at inspiring the tourism sector and keen Kiwi organisation’s to get on board using the catchphrase ‘He Korero mo Aotearoa – On the road with te Reo’.

A focus on manaakitanga - hospitality



Commuters to Wellington Railway Station were greeted this morning with ‘Kia ora’, hupa (soup), and paraoa (bread) to kick off this year’s Maori Language Week.

Staff from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori – Maori Language Commission, Te Puni Kokiri the Human Rights Commission. Tourism New Zealand and ZMFM were on the road early to encourage people to give Maori language a go.

The Minister of Maori Affairs was also in attendance.

Enter Maori Language Week Awards

Entries to the Maori Language Week Awards close on 14 August 2007.

There are 19 Maori Language Week Award to be won: Tourism, Health, Sport, Television, Radio, Print, Business, Central Government, Local Body, Public Library, Community, Art, Preschool, Primary School, Intermediate School, High School, Tertiary Institution as well as an Inaugural and Supreme Award.

All entries will be judged on the organisations ability to demonstrate commitment to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori, innovative and creative use of Maori language.
