2005 Maori Language Week Awards Finalists Announced


Finalists in the second annual Maori Language Week Awards were announced today, winners will be declared at a Gala Dinner in Wellington on 14 September.

In announcing the finalists the judges panel of Lana Simmons-Donaldson (Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori, the Maori Language Commission), Bob Newson (Te Kahui Tika Tangata, Human Rights Commission) and Harima Fraser (Te Puni Kokiri, Ministry of Mäori Development) commended the efforts organisations had made in the presentation of their entries.

There were 32 entries received and the judges said they were extremely impressed with the quality and diversity of the entries.

There are a total of eleven awards over five categories:

  1. Media - Television, Radio and Print
  2. Government - Central Government, Local Body, Public Library
  3. Community, School and Educational Institution
  4. Business
  5. Supreme Award - the best of the best

Te Taura Whiri Chief Executive Haami Piripi said the spread of entries throughout the country highlighted the success and reach of Maori Language Week held 26 July - 1 August, through the "Korero Maori, Give it a go" campaign.

"The 'Give it a go' theme seems to have struck a chord with New Zealanders and I want to congratulate all of those individuals and organisations who celebrated and promoted Maori Language."
