TV 3 takes out supreme award at the Maori Language Week Awards
TV3 took the top prize, the Supreme Award, at the Maori Language Week Awards held in Wellington last night.
Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (Maori Language Commission) Chief Executive Haami Piripi in presenting the Supreme Award commended TV 3 for being the first channel to broadcast in reo Maori on the mainstream news every night during the week.
“All winners and finalists should be congratulated for their efforts to support reo Mäori it was encouraging to see so many community groups, organisations and individuals giving it a go,” Haami said.
“Winners and finalist ideas to support Mäori Language Week were innovative and varied from encouraging staff to pronounce words well, setting up a Mäori Language club, putting up bilingual signs and displays, printing reo Mäori resources and organising various activities including kapa haka performances, hangi and te reo story telling.”
Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres said it was great to see a significant number of the awards being awarded to private sector organisations including TV 3, Diagnostic Medlab, and Gisborne Herald. “It is an indication that te reo Maori is being taken up as an important aspect of commerce and culture.”
Hekia Parata Deputy Secretary, Policy Te Puni Kökiri said last night’s awards were a great celebration of Mäori language and they are already planning how they can encourage greater participation by central and local government next year.
